Data Project and Service
The data project "IBF Monitoring of Vascular Plants" was established by W. Ahlmer, J. Klotz and Prof. Dr. P. Poschlod. It is part of the DFG funded IBF project with the aim to gain observational records of vascular plants in the field using the smartphone application DiversityMobile.
"IBF Monitoring of Vascular Plants" also includes research data of Otto Mergenthaler (1898–2001). This well-known botanist collected high-quality data on vascular plants in Eastern Bavaria mostly between 1970 and 1985. The more than 196.000 detailed observations mostly done by himself, rarely by some co-workers, are well documented. They were databased already in the 1990th and maps with hand-marked field areas were digitalised at the same time. This was partly done as a project financially supported by the Regierung der Oberpfalz. Data processing and optimization was later done by the Zentralstelle für die Floristische Kartierung Bayerns in Regensburg. In the context of the IBF plants project this original database was transformed and the more than 196.000 data records were integrated in Diversity Workbench (=DWB) components. All data are processed by DWB and made accessible via national and international portals. They mainly include single observational records and are supplemented with several ecological data. In general, the taxonomy and nomenclature follows the Standard List of Plant Names of Germany as curated by the Bundesamt für Naturschutz with special supplements made by W. Ahlmer, Zentralstelle für die Floristische Kartierung Bayerns. With completion of the research project, data are technically managed by the long-term data repository at the SNSB IT Center of the Staatliche Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen Bayerns, now in the context of the Flora von Bayern initiative.
